Con Edison Sponsors Advocacy Today: New Directions in Health, Safety And Wellness

Health Professionals Share Expertise With Social Services Providers

NEW YORK, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) hosted its annual Customer Outreach conference today at Con Edison's Learning Center in Long Island City. This year's conference "Advocacy Today: A Con Edison Forum on New Directions in Health, Safety and Wellness" brought together recognized health experts who shared their knowledge and experience with a group of social-service providers who assist Con Edison's customers.

In addition to workshops and case studies on myriad health topics, a panel discussion focused on Con Edison's emergency customer notification system, with emphasis on establishing a partnership with health professionals to identify customers on electrically operated life support equipment.

"Providing reliable energy service to our customers is a priority at Con Edison," said Marilyn Caselli, vice president of customer operations for Con Edison. "But we strive to give much more to the communities we serve. Helping to keep our customers and their families healthy is one more way in which we extend our commitment to them. This conference is a wonderful instrument to spread the word on the tools to achieve long, disease-free lives."

Keynote speaker Dr. Benjamin Chu, President of New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, said, "One of the most important things that we in the health care profession can do is to proactively join other community organizations to promote preventive health care and effective disease management. Masci, M.D., director of the Department of Medicine at Elmhurst Hospital; Ingrid Felix-Peralta, M.D., Elmhurst Hospital; Ana Olivero, M.D., FAAP, chair Columbia Presbyterian Community Physicians; Mary Albani, Con Edison's Environment, Health & Safety; and Joanna Wolff, Con Edison's Customers Operations.

Topics discussed at the conference included the impact of nutrition on health, medical monitoring in breast and prostate cancer, child obesity, the health insurance crisis, asthma, infection control, bio-terrorism, depression, substance abuse, suicide, and safeguarding the environment.

Con Edison's Customer Outreach department was available to guests throughout the conference to answer questions about the company's life sustaining equipment message and to provide information on energy efficiency.
