Con Edison's Chairman Principal For a Day

NEW YORK, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Edison, Inc.'s chairman, president and chief executive officer, Eugene R. McGrath, took the helm of another organization today, serving as Principal For A Day at the High School for Environmental Studies on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Usually running one of the nation's largest energy companies, today McGrath will get a firsthand opportunity to appreciate the challenges of running a high school in the largest public school system in the country.

"This is the only time I look forward to being sent to the principal's office," said McGrath. "While corporate financial support is important, money alone doesn't solve problems. We also need to share our time, our people and our experiences," he added.

Because of Con Edison's commitment to environmental excellence and the necessity for sound decision making on environmental matters, the High School for Environmental Studies is a natural fit for McGrath. The school is built on the belief that educators can use young people's inherent interest in environmental issues and themes both to create a stimulating academic program and to encourage students to begin lifelong explorations of environmental issues.

"Con Edison's corporate values highlight the company's unwavering commitment to environmental excellence. These students, who already understand the significance of the environment, are learning how to use their knowledge wisely in the business world," McGrath stated.

Mr. McGrath, who has participated in the program for the past several years, is one of eight Con Edison executives who are volunteering as Principals For A Day at schools throughout New York City.
