As Hurricane Floyd worked its way up the eastern seaboard, Con Edison and Orange & Rockland crews worked throughout the night to restore power to our customers. Although Floyd, which was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hit New York, spared New York City from debilitating damage, customers in Westchester, Orange and Rockland counties paid a heavier price. As of 7:00 a.m., fewer than 500 customers were still without power in the city while approximately 10,000 Westchester customers are still experiencing outages. The O&R service territory suffered unexpectedly high winds and heavy rains during the tropical storm and the resulting damage left approximately 57,000 customers without power.

Flooding in northern Westchester, Orange and Rockland counties is, at times, making it difficult for Con Edison, O&R and contractor crews to reach their destinations and begin repairs. Extra crews have been assigned to both Westchester and O&R in order to speed restoration. It is too soon to project when power will be restored to all customers.

Once again, overhead crews, ladder-line crews, troubleshooters, tree trimming crews, engineers, technical and support staff, district operators and of course, red wagon crews answered the call.
