Con Edison Repowering Project Will Lower Overall Emissions From East River Plant
|
NEW YORK, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) (NYSE: ED) announced today that the repowering of the East River Generating Station is expected to result in an overall decrease in emissions from the power plant. ``This project will fully replace an older Con Edison steam generating facility, the Waterside plant. It will have one-fourth the total rate of air emissions of that facility. In response to community concerns about the level of emissions from existing generation at the East River site, we are proposing a program of operational enhancements, reduced oil-burning, and equipment upgrades,'' said Luther Tai, senior vice president of Central Operations. The company estimates that the proposed program would result in more than an eight percent reduction in overall emissions from present levels at the East River Complex with the project in operation. The primary focus of the repowering plan is to enhance and improve Con Edison's ability to cleanly, reliably and economically supply steam by installing a state-of-the-art steam generation facility in an unused portion of the East River generating station. ``Con Edison is committed to ensuring community involvement in the planning of the East River Repowering Project. We have worked diligently over the past year and a half to keep the community informed and we have pledged to work closely with citizens, businesses, and government officials throughout the process to ensure that there is opportunity for all community issues to be raised and considered,'' said Tai.
