Con Edison Presents Its Fifth Annual Environmental Excellence Awards

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Edison Inc. (NYSE: ED) today honored 80 employees for contributing outstanding achievements to the company's environmental and safety efforts. At a breakfast at Con Edison's Learning Center, each award recipient was presented with a certificate of recognition and a check for $1,000 in appreciation for their environmental, health and safety excellence. John P. Cahill, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), delivered the keynote speech.

"Protecting the environment and maintaining a safe workplace is critical to the well-being of our employees and to the people and businesses we serve," said Eugene R. McGrath, chairman and chief executive officer of Con Edison. "Today we are honoring the men and women who met and exceeded our high standards for environmental performance."

"It is thanks to employees like those we honor today that Con Edison has become a leader in taking responsibility for the environment," said M. Peter Lanahan, Con Edison's vice president for Environment, Health and Safety. "Through their dedication and efforts we are in a better position to accomplish continuous environmental improvements."

Candidates for the awards were nominated for their superior performance in environmental, health and safety matters.

Commissioner Cahill said, "At DEC, we are committed to working cooperatively with all of New York's businesses to enable them to comply with environmental regulations as efficiently as possible. Con Ed should be commended for their efforts to develop innovative programs that empower individual employees and encourage them to take a personal stake in helping to protect the environment and the health and safety of all New Yorkers."

Award winners' ideas, suggestions and innovations include a safer system for moving heavy equipment; overhauling company procedures; crafting more productive equipment; developing creative programs to share Con Edison's safety message, and even rescuing fellow New Yorkers from potentially dangerous situations, such as fires and car crashes.
