Con Edison To Hold Public Forum On East River Repowering Plan
|
Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) will hold the second in a series of public awareness forums on its plan to repower its East River generating station located at East 14th Street and Avenue D in Manhattan. The forum will be held on Wednesday, February 2, 2000 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Baruch College Conference Center, 151 East 25th Street. At the forum, Con Edison will provide an update on the current status of the plan, and will also review and discuss the proposed agreements, called "stipulations," regarding the scope and content for the application of the project, including the environmental studies that Con Edison is planning to conduct. The primary focus of the repowering plan is to enhance and improve Con Edison’s ability to reliably and economically supply steam by installing a state-of-the-art steam generation facility in an unused portion of the East River generating station. The co-generation technology to be used will also generate electricity ancillary to the plan’s primary purpose. "We are excited about the economic and environmental benefits the East River Repowering Plan will offer as we enter the 21st century," said Stephen B. Bram, senior vice president of central operations for Con Edison. "Con Edison welcomes public involvement throughout this project and we will continue to work very hard to ensure that all questions and concerns are addressed." The plan calls for replacing the steam production capacity of the company’s Waterside generating station, located on First Avenue between 38th and 40th Streets, with new capacity at the East River station. Subsequently, the Waterside station will be closed and sold along with other nearby Con Edison properties on First Avenue. Con Edison projects that the East River Repowering Plan also would generate additional city and state tax revenue, create hundreds of high-paying construction jobs, increase access to the waterfront and stimulate significant economic activity in the area. Additional information about project can be found by accessing the East River Repowering Plan page on Con Edison’s website at www.coned.com/ERRP or by calling 800-373-0130. |
