Con Edison Enrolls 100,000 Customers in Electric Retail Choice Program

NEW YORK, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Con Edison) said today that it has enrolled its 100,000th customer in the company's Electric Retail Choice Program, which encourages customers to choose alternate energy suppliers. Regardless of which supplier customers choose, Con Edison will continue to deliver the electricity to homes and businesses in its service area. This milestone places the Con Edison program among the most popular in the country. Under the program, now in its third year, all customers are able to purchase electricity and gas from alternate suppliers called Energy Services Companies, or ESCOs. To facilitate comparison-shopping, customers can obtain a list of participating ESCOs through the Con Edison Web site at

"We've seen a steady stream of interest from our customers in this program since we first opened the enrollment and the interest has continued to grow," said Marilyn Caselli, Con Edison vice president, customer operations. "What we find most encouraging is the interest in the program from a broad spectrum of customers," she added.

To further encourage competition in the electricity marketplace, Con Edison has sold most of its power plants and is concentrating its business on the safe and reliable delivery of electricity and gas to the homes and businesses in its service area of New York City and Westchester County.
