Con Edison Delivering the Juice: Customers Break Monday's 2009 Peak Use Record
NEW YORK, NY, Aug 20, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Con Edison customers broke a 2009 peak-electricity demand record today for the third time in 10 days when the company delivered 12,083 megawatts (MW) at 5 p.m.

It's the first day peak demand topped 12,000 megawatts (MW) this year and the 30th time in company history since the milestone was first crossed in 2001.

Today's electricity draw handily surpassed Monday's 11,937 MW and the next highest mark of 11,821 MW, set 10 days ago.

Today's preeminent peak demand indicates customers are feeling the heat, but in a year with milder-than-normal average weather, even today's usage falls short of Con Edison's all-time, peak-demand top ten. (The all-time peak record in the company's New York City and Westchester County service area is 13,141 MW, set on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at 5 p.m.)

The Con Edison system delivers energy across a network of 92,000 miles of underground and 33,000 miles of overhead wires to approximately 9 million New York City and Westchester County residents. Throughout the current heat spell, the company continues to monitor its systems around the clock to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of electricity.
