Con Edison Asks Customers to Reduce Electricity Use

In response to a request by the New York Power Pool, Consolidated Edison Company of New York Inc. (Con Edison) is asking its customers to reduce unnecessary electricity usage until 10 p.m. The request was made to all New York state electric companies because of energy shortages of upstate utilities. The electrical supply in New York City and Westchester County is sufficient to meet the expected load. The statewide public appeal is precautionary and intended to help ensure an adequate electrical supply.

Steps that customers can take include:

  • Setting air conditioners at 78 degrees or above.
  • Closing shades and blinds to keep homes cooler.
  • Limiting use of major appliances such as electric stoves, dishwashers, and clothes dryers.
  • Turning off unnecessary lights.

The situation is being constantly monitored and new developments will be reported. Con Edison thanks its customers for their cooperation.
